We chose our 2025 theme of PERCEPTIONS with a purpose.
Perceptions can be the very gateway through which creativity flows, acting as the liminal space where the known dissolves into the unknown. Aldous Huxley’s assertion that “There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception.” captures this transformative quality that can fuel an author’s creativity.
For playwrights, these doors are not merely metaphors but are active arenas for creative exploration. When characters in a play view the world through divergent lenses—where one sees truth and another, illusion or opposite sides of an argument—it creates a dynamic interplay that fuels drama, comedy, or suspense.
In theatre, shifting perceptions can trigger unexpected revelations, turning mundane situations into profound commentaries on life. The tension between what is real and what is imagined challenges the audience to question their own assumptions, inviting them into a shared journey of discovery.
Whether it is the comedic mishap born from a misunderstanding or the dramatic irony of hidden motives, the divergence in perceptions becomes a powerful tool for playwrights when crafting characters or situations. Perceptions can help move narratives along so that they resonate, evoke emotion, and ultimately, redefine the understanding of reality.
