A very wise man (wiser than us anyway) once said, "The desire to write grows with writing." This simple yet profound statement captures the essence of creativity—it is not just an initial spark, sometimes, it's not even a spark at all. But it's the constant work that creates a flame that intensifies with every word, every scene, and every story we craft. Others have said it more succinctly: the word comes from the work!

Write, write again, then write some more. The more you write the more you'll want to write.

Desire is a powerful force. It drives us to explore, to question, and to create, sometime, to resent. For playwrights, desire often is the heartbeat of their work. It pushes them to delve into the complexities of human emotions, to challenge norms, and to bring untold stories to life on stage.

Our annual competition invites playwrights to explore this very theme—Desire. Whether it’s the longing for love, the hunger for success, or the yearning for change, desire shapes our lives and our art.

With just four weeks left to submit, now is the time to let your creativity flow and write that play!.

How It Works:

All submissions will be read and assessed by a panel of theatre professionals.
Three scripts will be selected for a week of mentoring and development in Birr (County Offaly), guided by Playwright and Screenwriter Eugene O’Brien.
Selected playwrights will refine their scripts, culminating in a rehearsed reading by professional actors at the festival finale.
Industry professionals will judge the final versions, and a winner will be chosen.

Dramaturgy support with the literary department at The Abbey Theatre
A scholarship with Fishamble, the New Play Company
A Theatre Residency at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre in 2027
