Unleash Your Story: SCRIPTS 2026 Explores the Power of DESIRE

What drives us? What do we crave? This year, SCRIPTS – Ireland’s Playwriting Festival invites you to explore the raw, unfiltered power of DESIRE. Whether it’s love, ambition, or obsession, we want to see what you create when the stage is yours.
Taking place in Birr, Co Offaly from the 29th of June to the 5th of July 2026, SCRIPTS creates unique opportunities for playwrights to have their work developed and produced. All you need to do is WRITE. Craft a 15-minute play with no more than 3 characters on this year’s theme and submit it to our panel by Tuesday, 7th April 2026 at 12 noon.
How It Works:
All submissions will be read and assessed by a panel of theatre professionals.
Three scripts will be selected for a week of mentoring and development in Birr, guided by Playwright and Screenwriter Eugene O’Brien.
Selected playwrights will collaborate with a team of artists to refine their scripts, culminating in a rehearsed reading by professional actors at the festival finale.
Industry professionals will judge the final versions, and a winner will be chosen.

Dramaturgy support with the literary department at The Abbey Theatre
A scholarship with Fishamble, the New Play Company
A Theatre Residency at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre in 2027
