When we were researching this year’s theme of “Perceptions” we came across a quote from Angelina Jolie “If I make a fool of myself, who cares? I'm not frightened by anyone's perception of me.” In our minds it crystallised the idea of fearlessness. We see playwrights as courageous artists who step into the spotlight with all their quirks, their wild ideas, and all the things that make their voice unique. But in order to do that one needs to embrace The Power of Fearless Storytelling.

Writing a play, is not just scripting dialogue or staging scenes; it’s offering the world a unique and personal interpretation of life. Every playwright sees the world differently, and these unique perceptions (see what we did there?) are what shape the diverse, vibrant and living landscape of theatre. Too often, the fear of judgment or ridicule can hold us back. So, Angelina’s affirmation is a crucial reminder that creative expression is an act of bravery. It’s a declaration that your truth—no matter how unconventional—is worth sharing.

Writing a play, especially one as compact and powerful as the ones we’re looking for (15 minutes or less, featuring no more than 3 characters), demands that you convey your vision tightly, succinctly without artifice. Distilled to its purest form your truth will come through. We do not see this constraint as a limitation; it’s, to our mind, an opportunity to focus on the essence of your story and to craft every line and every moment with intent and clarity. This focus will help you create a world that is entirely your own—a world where your ideas flourish without compromise.

Originality Over Approval

With Scripts we focus on new material for the stage that thrives on fresh perspectives and the willingness to take risks. Original ideas spark new conversations, challenge societal norms, and inspire others to see the world from a different angle. Setting aside the fear of making a fool of oneself, opens the door to experimentation. It’s by pushing every boundary, and the ones we set ourselves are sometimes the hardest to push, leads to discoveries. Playwrights will find new ways to  express themselves once they get rid of the burden of others’ expectations.

Consider these tips as you begin crafting your play:

  • Trust Your Vision: Remember, every groundbreaking play started as a risky, unconventional idea. Don’t dilute your message to fit what you think the audience expects. Stick to your guns!

  • Simplify and Focus: With a maximum of three characters and a 15-minute runtime, every moment on stage counts. Let your narrative be a concentrated burst of emotion and thought that will take over the audience.

  • Embrace Vulnerability: Sharing your inner world on stage takes courage. Use your vulnerability as a source of strength—allow it to connect you with your audience at a deeper level.

  • Challenge Norms: The theme “PERCEPTIONS” invites you to question and redefine what we see as ‘normal’. What truths lie hidden beneath the surface? What new realities can you reveal?

Shaping New Worlds Through Theatre

Remember, every play you write has the power to reshape perceptions. Theatre at its best isn’t merely about entertainment; it’s a dynamic dialogue with society. It invites audiences to challenge their preconceived notions and to see the world through a different lens. When you write without fear, you contribute to this ever-evolving conversation. You create a space where every character, every line of dialogue, and every dramatic pause speaks volumes about the human experience. That’s the transformative power of fearless storytelling.

Now Is Your Moment to Shine

Scripts Festival is more than just a submission opportunity—it’s a call to action for all those who dare to see the world differently. With the deadline fast approaching (21.03.2025 at 12noon), now is the time to harness that inner fire. Let Jolie’s words remind you: if you’re willing to take a risk, if you’re ready to put your unique perspective on display, then nothing should hold you back.Dive into the creative process with abandon. Write that play that challenges perceptions, that questions the status quo, and that is unapologetically you. Remember, if a story is worth telling, it is worth telling right. Let your work echo with the bravery of your convictions and inspire others to find their own voice in the vast, uncharted world of theatre.

Get ready to submit your fearless creation and be a part of a festival that celebrates original visions and the power of storytelling. Your stage awaits—own it, and let your perceptions shape a new reality.
